Thank You for the Music was a long-time dream and vision for our founder and President, Shelley Gimbel. A former piano teacher and lifelong believer in the power of music, Shelley has always had a passion for helping the community and giving back. When her piano students started telling her about the old, poor quality pianos they had access to at school, the idea for Thank You for the Music started to form.

In June 2007, Shelley hosted the first Thank You for the Music fundraiser – a benefit concert at the Stanley Theatre in Vancouver. Proceeds from the event were used to purchase two pianos that were donated to elementary schools in Surrey and Burnaby.

After a hiatus that involved motherhood and other significant life events, Shelley came back to the dream of a music non-profit and started to recruit a Board of Directors in 2015. Thank You for the Music Society was officially incorporated as a non-profit society in B.C. in May 2016.
